SATs solution is a springboard for improved outcomes and wellbeing

Recent data suggests that a new digital solution designed to provide a better way for teachers and pupils to prepare for SATs is improving pupil outcomes, lowering pupil anxiety, and reducing teacher workload.
An impact report released by a leading education specialist, Learning by Questions (LbQ), revealed that 98% of teachers surveyed agreed that their pupils made greater academic progress than they would have done without its new ‘SATs Springboard’, and 100% agreed that the solution reduced their workload.
Developed in response to challenges frequently identified by teachers in preparing children for Key Stage 2 SATs – including time pressures, curriculum coverage, streaming, anxiety and workload – SATs Springboard offers an alternative approach.
“SATs Springboard has completely revolutionised my approach to SATs”, says Neil Davies, Year 5/6 Class Teacher and Leader of English at West Horndon Primary School in Brentwood, Essex.
The need to photocopy past papers, work through marking, undertake question-level-analysis and seek materials online is reduced with SATs Springboard. The solution identifies gaps and delivers online resources direct to pupils, enabling teachers to easily tailor support to each individual pupil.
Since its launch in September 2023, over 22,000 children have used SATs Springboard across 730 classes.
A recent survey carried out by LbQ sought feedback from the school leaders and teachers who had used its resources. Results showed that in addition to improvements in academic progress and reduced teacher workload, use of SATs Springboard had also resulted in a positive impact on wellbeing.
92% of teachers agreed that using the solution reduced pupil anxiety and 97 percent agreed that it positively impacted on their own wellbeing.
“It gives me an extra hour in my day, that’s five hours a week. It’s like having an extra pair of hands in the classroom,” says Sara Herriot, Head of School, Year 6 Teacher, Brampton Abbotts Primary. “Our class averages are rising at 5% week on week.”
Springboard is built around 12 maths and 12 English diagnostic assessments that are gradually introduced throughout a year, to dynamically create a personalised revision roadmap for the whole class and every child within it.
Sir Kevan Collins, Executive Vice Chair of LbQ, Special Advisor to the Department for Education, and Former Chair of the Education Endowment Foundation, adds: “Tackling pupil anxiety, reducing teacher workload and improving outcomes might seem like an unlikely combination – too good to be true. However, a random sample of teachers unanimously reported that harnessing the power of technology and putting LbQ to work in their classrooms did just that.”
